Improved Clinch Knot

The Improved Clinch ranks high on the popularity list for tying a line or leader to a hook, swivel, or lure. Although it's breaking strength falls in the 95-percent category, it is quick and easy to tie; and we have a great 3-step instruction with illustrations below:

STEP I - the small loop at the hook eye:along the standing part. Make five turns with the tag end around the standing part, then push the tag end through - Insert about six inches of the tag end through the eye of the hook, bringing it back (drawing the line with heavier lines shouldn't pose a problem as long as your eye is wide enough. With very light mono, double the line first. If you are using heavier mono, try 3 1/2 turns. You may only need 4 turns with lines testing above 8 or 10 pounds)

STEP II - After passing the tag end through the first small loop, slip it through the large loose loop formed when the tag end enters the first small loop:

STEP III - Lubricate the knot with water or saliva and pull on both the hook and the standing part of the line to draw it tight. Trim the tag end close to the knot, leaving an 8th inch tag sticking out:
